This airport was officially opened on June 6 1974. It is located about 30 kilometres north of the Johor capital of Johor Bahru. It is large enough to handle Boeing 747-200 flights. Six years after its inception, with a larger runaway and enlarged apron, the airport was able to handle DC-10 flights. By the year the 1990s, there were 18 daily scheduled flights, including B737-400 flights. During the Haj season, there are direct B747-200 flights to Jeddah.

The Extension and Renovation Project of the Airport Terminal Building was needed in order to facilitate the need of each and every customer of the Airport.
To Officiate the said project, a ceremony on laying of the foundation stone took place on the 29 th day of October, 1996, by the Menteri Besar of Johore - YAB Dato' Hj.Abd Ghani Othman. |

After the major renovations project costing approximately RM 85 million, one could see the tremendous change in image and outlook of Johor Bahru Airport. Phase I of the project concentrates on the renovation of the main Terminal Building and the Landscaping. The space area of the New Terminal Building is 15,817 square metres and is spacious and able to accommmodate 1,000 passengers at a time and compared to the old terminal that could only accommodate about 400 passengers. |
